The Opioid Epidemic: How it Happened and What We’re Doing About It

Stephanie Shaner, M.D. is a physician, administrator, lecturer and training supervisor with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG), at the Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), a Kaiser Foundation Hospital   She is Chief of the Department of Addiction Medicine, evaluating and treating both outpatients and inpatients with addictions and co-occurring disorders.  She is Assistant Area Medical Director at LAMC, responsible for Quality and Risk Management, Patient Safety, Regulatory Services, Credentials and Privileges, and Infection Control.  She oversees the functioning of the Departments of Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry (inpatient and outpatient), and Social Medicine.  Dr. Shaner is a Senior Faculty Member of the Center for Medical Education at LAMC.  She lectures on such subjects as diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric, addictive and co-occurring disorders, limit-setting, handling the difficult patient, and smoking cessation, in addition to Quality and Patient Safety.  Dr. Shaner is the Regional Chief of Addiction Medicine for the Southern California Region of SCPMG (SCAL).  She also chairs the SCAL Regional Peer Review Oversight Committee for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan. Shaner holds double boards in Psychiatry and Neurology and in Addiction Medicine.
