ISSUE NO. 11 September 30, 2003 OUR 82nd YEAR

IT WAS CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY DAY!
That Captain of Industry JOSEPH FITZSIMONS led us into welcoming our guests and visitors, and Capt. BRIAN WEST led us in spirituality ( Poor guy, he is put to work on his lunch hour – probably an occupational hazard for the Salvation Army Man though.) PETRA HAFfTER was our new member, she’s a captain of movies. Then there was radio captain – JACK SIEGAL as program chair. And of course our Commander in Chief was in charge of it all, Captain Dee held the troops in line.
DR JAIME REGALADO spoke on the FIVE D’S IMPERILING CALIFORNIA, Disengagement, Dualism, Dependency, Disarticulation and Dysfunctional. Thankfully it was not indicative of his talk, which was Distilled, Distinct, Direct, Discernable and Delightful for this political peruser.
A most engaging talk on voter apathy, the two party system, our reliance on the traditional government systems that are failing, the giant void between what the citizens want and need versus the governments offerings, and the dysfunction of the current administration.
Citing an example for how the Law of Unintended Consequences works; he showed that the Term Limits are causing problems because what the legislature is looking like these days is a perpetual rookie camp, where senior committee members are still trying it all out, and then they are termed out.
I wonder if I could get college credit towards another degree based on some of these speakers….. Hey Bill, can you help me out here?
Yup, the FIRST ANNUAL ROTARY FUN NIGHT is back. I know, how can something be back if it’s a “First Annual”, don’t ask me, talk to the smiling man at the back table. The good looking one in the wild clothes and who is a Greek version of that master of promotion, P.T. Barnum. He says there’s a F.A.R.F coming up on the 23rd of October. This MEMBERS only event is held at the Lower Bel Air Beach Club and is a night of cardsharking, joking, frivolity and overindulging. All for $25.00. The event is a casual dress one, and a reservation made is a reservation paid.
PAUL HARRIS FOUNDATION DINNER
The requests are starting for donations for the Silent Auction. See John McIntyre if you have a good donation – we need FIVE GOOD ONES.
COMMUNITY AND YOUTH FROM JOSEPH FITZSIMONS:
The Community & Youth Grants Committee of the Rotary Club of Santa Monica allocates a portion of the club's financial resources in a way that will make an impact on the needs of our community by providing limited financial support for worthwhile capital improvement projects of non-profit organizations, with emphasis on non-profit organizations that provide services to the Santa Monica community. The committee does not fund operating costs or needs. A Capital Improvement Project Grant Applications can be obtained from Linda Gray.
WELCOME BACK MR. WHITING!
PHIL WHITING is back and keeping order at that back table, thankfully, those guys can be so disruptive sometimes! <grin>
GOTTA GO GROUP – IT WENT.
Heard from perpetual birthday boy HUNT, that the GGG had a GGGRAND time at the old fish factory down in Long Beach. The bus left PAT FARRIS’ Methodist church on time with the CUMMINS’, the FRITZSCHE’s, the HUNT’s, the RICE’s, and the RIMERS’s along with SUSAN DAWSON, BOB MOORE, VIVIAN SPURGEON, PHYLLIS MORRISON AND OUR ROTARY CLUB GLUE – LINDA GRAY to go see how the fishies play.
The GGG had a grand time and is looking to do a quarterly event based on the success of this one. Next up is the Arboretum in January, and the it could be the DISNEY CONCERT HALL, THE KODAK THEATER, OR A DAY AT THE RACES.
FIND OUT WHAT LAW AND ORDER IS REALLY LIKE.
The Superior Court is looking for applicants for the Grand Jury. To be on a Grand Jury is a great opportunity to serve your city, learn about the legal process and find out what the criminals are REALLY doing. Please see DEE about applying. You need to be able to devote almost full time to this opportunity.
GEORGE COLLINS got tagged with a custom bill for his trip to ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES, cost him a 258 British Pounds or 365 Euros, or a plain old $428.
JIM HALJUN better stick to studying his Italian Renaissance Drawing and Revival Architecture, because his faulty math skills cost him 180 British Pounds or 256 Euros, for a traditional $300.
MIKE HYLER’s medical skills got tested when ROBERT SEGAL was injured on the golf course to the tune of $1200 by a driver on the noggin. MIKE thinks ROBERT was giving unsolicited advice or talking back to a pro and that’s what caused it. But the PresiDEEnt decided that a fine of $300 was par for this course of action.
We warned you last week and the PresiDEEnt was true to her word, and MONIKA WHITE got her comeuppance for a full page article showcasing her writing abilities. $200 dollar later. I wonder what that works out to per word?
I’m sorry, but I was unclear on the grounds for the fine for BOB SULLIVAN in the last edition. Turns out he was dinged for 41 years of marriage, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BOB!

When people were lingering too long in the Hall of Wonders at the Barnum circus, ol' P.T. came up with a way to draw the crowds through faster, to get them through faster and to direct them along the way, he posted the following sign:
THIS WAY TO THE GREAT EGRESS.
