CONTRIBUTING INFORMATION: SUMMER IN SENEGAL

BY JON KEMP

Annie Bird, recipient of the Rotary District 5280 ambassadorial scholarship, was sponsored by none other than our Rotary Club of Santa Monica in 2001-2002.  Annie is a fine example of how we (as Rotarians) can make a positive impact worldwide.  Following are excerpts from her most recent communications.

Hello Rotary Club of Santa Monica:

I have recently returned from Senegal and have had an incredible experience.  Our group of ten from Operation Crossroads Africa (OCA) linked up with a Senegalese non-governmental organization called Action Humane pour le Development Integral au Senegal (AHDIS).  The organization was given government funding to facilitate a microfinance project in the city of Bambey and its surrounding villages. This is the last year of the project and they wanted us to help with the evaluation process.  We visited about 10 of the 37 different villages that AHDIS works with the surrounding the city of Bambey, as well as numerous projects within the city.  After the interviews with groups and individuals taking part in microfinance, we reported successes, challenges, as well as our recommendations.

There are many things to write about the experience.  I will list just a few briefly.  Only 50% of Senegal’s population speaks French, while the balance speak Wolof and other indigenous languages.  Although this presented an obstacle in our verbal communication, we took classes and learned some basic phrases.  Weekend trips around Senegal were an exciting time to get to feel for the country and visit other project.

When I think of Senegal, I think of the kindest, most generous, and relaxed people.  Despite incredibly difficult living circumstances, there exists a consciousness of their reality and creativity to find solutions.  I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this experience and other international experiences, thanks to programs and people that support this type of work.  This trip was extremely humbling and eye opening, and I feel propelled to continue my studies and service in order to be a part of positive change.

As a result of your support, this opportunity was made possible, and I really want to extend my most heartfelt gratitude.  I have now returned to UC Berkeley to finish up and start looking into Master’s and PhD programs.  I am also planning to involve myself in some research activities on campus.  I look forward to hearing from you and hope that your summer has been pleasant and peaceful.

Warmly,

Annie Bird

CONTRIBUTING INFORMATION: DISTRICT GOVERNOR PAT CASHIN OFFICIAL VISIT

BY BILL CROOKSTON

We were privileged to have DISTRICT  GOVERNOR  Pat Cashin, Laura Calderwood (EXECUTIVE AID), and our own Bill Crookston (ASSISTANT GOVERNOR), perform their annual official visit.  While this is a normal Rotary District procedure, it also gives us (our club) an opportunity to dot our I’s and cross our T’s respective of the business and the organizational aspect of Rotary.

Our luncheon meeting was preceded by a meeting with the Governor, our Directors and Committee Chairman, who apprised the Governor of our clubs goals for the ensuing Rotary year.  These objectives were nicely articulated by all as well as properly delineated in our 2004-2005 Club Information Guide.

Our club can be very proud of our chairs, co-chairs, and members of our 46 various committees, who continue to serve so well.  I wish to thank all, for their contributions of intellect, energy and time given so freely, to honor our club and with great respect to our District Governor.

A special note of appreciation to Jon Kemp and our Directors for compiling and organizing the comprehensive information they received from the committees.  The Club Information Guide (a copy of which will be forth coming) was produced by Steve Litvack, “One Stop Print Shop”, and its contents were organized by Jon Kemp, and typed by Elza Ruhman.

DID YOU KNOW

When multiplying any number by 9, the sum of the digits of the product will always equal 9.

Examples:     9x2 = 18, then 1+8 =9

9x6 = 54, then 4+5 = 9,

                   9x4345 = 39105, then 3+9+1+0+5 = 18, then 1+8 =9

                   9x5280 = 47520, then 4+7+5+2+0 = 18, then 1+8 =9
