THREE FINE FELLOWS AND ONLY ONE CAN BE FINED...

Paul P. Harris, 1868-1947, was the founder of Rotary, the world‘s first and most international service club.

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, promote high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build good will and peace in the world.

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, on April 19, 1868, Paul graduated from the University of Vermont, received his LLB degree from the University of Iowa and an honorary LLD from the University of Vermont.

On February 23, 1905, Paul formed the original Rotary service club with three other businessmen.  He gathered the group together in a spirit of friendship and understanding, each in a different form of service to the public.

The new club was called Rotary because members met in rotation at their various places of business. The second club, San Francisco was founded in 1908.  Clubs were formed in Canada and Great Britain in 1912 and the organization became Rotary International in 1922.

Today there are over 31,149 Rotary Clubs with more than 1.2 million members in 166 countries and geographical regions throughout the free world.

The general objectives of Rotary Clubs in every country are the same: The development of fellowship and understanding among the business and professional leaders in the community, the promotion of community endeavors, and of high standards in business and professional practices, and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace.   Rotary clubs everywhere have one basic ideal of service, which is thoughtfulness of and helpfulness to others.

In his last anniversary message, Paul Harris said, “I would like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have only just begin.”

Thank you Mr. Harris for your vision.  Happy 100th year celebration

Ecumenically Speaking: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

One of the most cherished Jewish celebrations around the world is Rosh Hashanah, a High Holy Day celebrating the Jewish New Year. The holiday continues for two days. All Jewish holidays begin at sundown. This year, Rosh Hashanah began at sundown on Wednesday, September 15 and is traditionally commemorated with prayer in the synagogue, the lighting of candles, a holiday blessing, and a special feast shared with family and friends. Instead of eating the usual braided challah bread, a round challah is eaten (to signify a full round year) & dipping apple in honey wishing everyone at the table a sweet good year.

Ten days following the observance of Rosh Hashanah is Yom Kippur, the holiest of Holy Days. On the eve of Yom Kippur, just before sundown, the family gathers to have a big meal. For those who are going to fast, this is the last meal until sundown the next day. On this day of Atonement, one may reflect upon actions of the year past and seek renewal through prayer and fasting. In synagogues throughout the world, a very special prayer is heard, Kol Nidre. It touches the hearts and souls of the Jewish people with remembrance of lost ones and sad events. Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur are a time for self-examination, spirituality, and holiness.
