GREETINGS ROTARIANS AND FRIENDS:
I hope you all enjoyed your Labor Day Weekend, let this not be your last outdoor party and cookout this year, as we are in California--LUCKY US!
PROGRAM - September 10TH
Pete Mitchell is the founder and President of an organization dedicated to teaching the success principals of leadership called Fundamental Leadership.com. Pete is a sought after public speaker on the topics of leadership, government, and business success. You can learn some of the most profound leadership principles by looking into the lives of American heroes. Pete is the author of Modern Day Heroes: In Defense of America.
Don’t miss this presentation-especially those of us who would like to improve their business leadership skills.
BON VOYAGE PARTY
George Collins and Tom Loo hosted a great event August 28, 2004 at Tom’s Malibu Home to say “So Long till Later” to six Japanese exchange students, and also to thank and honor their Host families. In attendance, were our District Governor Pat & Betty Cashin, and our District Governor Elect. Ingo and Mary Werk.
Helping Tom and Stephanie to make this a success were, George & Pat Collins, June Doy, Susan Hartenbaum, Diane Margolin, Hal & Kai-li Quigley, Elza Ruhman. Hiroko Ikeda and Sally Pai, with their gracious language skills made the young people feel very comfortable. Once again, our club demonstrated what goodwill and International Service really means. Nice work by all.
FINES
Fining is a nice way of remembering our members for their achievements in a light and joyful manner. One may believe (without being aware) that we fine excessive amounts, such however is not the case; our club only assesses or fines a member an amount never to exceed that which she or he has pledged. These pledges are billed three times a year, beginning October 01, Jan. 01, and April 01, and are included with other quarterly billing of lunches and dues etc.
It would be good of you to share with our new members, guest and other potential members this information, so we don’t scare them away.
ATTENDANCE
A positive word which when practiced in a heedful manner will always produce positive results. In Rotary, attendance has been held in reverence and one may even say virtuous. You, as invited members of many classifications provide a cross section of our community respected citizens. Without you, we cannot get to know the community needs in order to be of “ Service As Required.” With minimal attendance, as a club we are without the necessary collective energy and wisdom. As individuals we become less informed of the value and service efforts and accomplishments of our club. Remember our Rotary sponsor thought us to be a worthy contributor of our time and energy. Let us make our sponsors proud. Please, note our Rotary emblem, “The Gear”. The key way in the hub is symbolic of a drive gear when keyed to the shaft, transfers energy. That is our purpose as Rotarians.
Rotary International minimum attendance requirements are as follows:
1. Must attend 60% of all scheduled meetings during semi annual reporting periods.
2. Must attend 60% of all scheduled meetings at our home club.
3. Must attend 60% of the meeting time (45 Minutes) 12:15 –1:00 P.M.
4. Must never miss more than four meeting in a row.
5. Please notify the president or guest speaker when early departure is required.
Note: The above are minimums and may produce minimal club results, for club greatness we should endeavor to establish higher standards.
THE SANTA MONICA ROTARY CLUB FOUNDATION
To acquaint our membership in general, and our new members in particular, please allow me to provide the following information. Our Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation is a non-profit 501-(C)3, foundation. On the occasion of our 50th anniversary, we established the Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation with an initial value of $50,000 to provide capital funds for worthwhile charitable projects in our community. For our 75th anniversary celebration in 1997, our club members pledged a combined amount of $75.000. Presently the foundation has grown (by wise investment and other contributions) to an excess of 500,000 in assets, while it has donated over $370,000 to more than 34 local charities and organizations.
I offer this information because many of us, (as I was unaware for several years) are not aware of our Clubs Foundation, because we have been thinking only of The Rotary International Foundation. There are 8 trustees on this foundation board in addition to President Jack Michel. They are John Bohn, Nat Charnley, Bill Fritzsche, Carol Jackson, Judy Neveau, Hal Quigley, Dick Rice, and Nat Trives. Since it’s inception, a great number of our Rotarians are regular contributors. There have also been several memorial funds established within our foundation in memory of our departed Rotarians. Should you desire more information regarding this foundation, please do not hesitate to contact Jack Michel or any member of the board.

"THAT'S ENOUGH FOR AWHILE"
Thought to Ponder:
When our best is not sufficient, then we must learn to do better.
