Rotary Club of Santa Monica

Meetings and Pictures

September - October 2005

On Oct 29 2005 Lee Ault CEO of In-Q-Tel, Inc. talked to us about new technology solutions to the CIA and the intelligence community.

Mickey Mouse Club leader Jimmy (aka PP Bill Fritzsche) awards PP "Dee" Menzies 1st Place  for best Halloween costume for the second year in a row. Check the meeting picture section to see Dee's prior year costume.

Meeting 10/21/05

We were pleased to have Santa Monica Theatre Arts Group entertain us. The six performers are pictured above during the grand finale. This program gets my vote for a 5 Rotary star rating. Apparently our audience thought so too when they gave these future stars a standing ovation!

 David Mortensen Loves Notre Dame!

The luck of the Irish ran out for Notre Dame in the final seconds of last Saturday's game to U.S.C. Well, David's luck also ran out when U.S.C. Man President Paul found out David was rooting for "The Fighting Irish", and fined him $150.

President Paul," I don't think the cell phone policy is working."

Meeting 10/14/05

We were "stoked" to have world champion surfer Shaun Tomson talk to us. We also were amazed to find out that our own Chris Baker is one of the West Side's best surfers.

Breaking News! Fred Rafeedie fined for Nothing.

Fred is an exemplary example of a member who follows the four way test to the highest of standards. Past Presidents have been unable to fine him for any reason. President Paul solved the problem. Paul's new motto is "if there is no reason for a fine then fine them for nothing". Well Fred was the recipient of Paul's new policy to the extent of $150.

Lunch Meeting 10/07/05 - Our guest speakers were our very own -- Today we had Craft Talks.

An impressionistic view of President Paul Leoni, Craft Talk Chairman Mike Nichols and a new member and one of the Craft Talkers -- Holly Gustlin.
Carol Jackson provided us with an articulate talk about her family and numerous interests.  We knew she is an outstanding CPA, but we now realize she is a Renaissance Woman.

Lunch Meeting 9/23/05 - Our guest speaker was  Dr. Lynn E. Davis  a senior political analyst at RAND

Congratulations Glenn Ricard!

Glenn was honored by President Paul for about $150. Glen, a long term member of the Boys and Girls Club Council, was elected to the Club's Board of Directors.

Our Web team was ecstatic to get this picture of Glen. He has been hiding from  our cameras for the last year or so.

Are our Armed Forces stretched too thin? Dr. Davis wonders if our soldiers are getting enough rest and relaxation and time off for family life. With all of the extraordinary pressures put on them, could they respond effectively to unexpected situations? She ponders whether the slow response to the  Hurricane disaster in New Orleans had anything to do with her queries.

Eat Pickled Herring and Keep Breathing

Michael M. Minchin, Jr., President of the John Douglas French Alzheimer’s Foundation of Los Angeles was our speaker on 9/16/05. He helped give us a deeper understanding of this devastating disease. Mr. Minchin's lively presentation let his great sense of humor flow through on this serious subject.

Some of his thoughts, quips, and insights on his presentation were:

bulletA diet that is healthy for the heart is also good for the mind.
bulletExercise seems to help. One suggestion is to walk at least a mile and one half a day.
bulletThe bad news is - your chances of getting Alzheimer's is about one in three.
bulletChocolate (the 70% or more variety) is good for fighting this disease.
bulletOne of the first signs of the disease is the diminished capacity to smell.
bulletThere is not much in the way of medicine that can help prevent this disease, except he notes, that the people of India have a much lesser incidence of the disease.  Most Indians have been taking a natural herb since childhood which seems to help.
bulletA one half bottle of red wine per night seems to help. (Unfortunately, he told me that Heineken has no positive effect.)
bulletIn his humorous way, his final thoughts about a long life and health was to "eat Pickled Herring and keep breathing".

Lunch Meeting 9/9/05

We honored our new Paul Harris Fellows. Some of the honorees were: Bill Frank, Fred Rafeedie, Stan Fox, Harmon Sieff, Gerry Smallwood , Jim Reidy, Jillian Alexander, PP Lionel Ruhman, Iao Katagiri, and Con Oyler.

We were very privileged to have as our guest speaker Dr. Yash Gupta Dean - USC Marshall School of Business. Dr. Gupta told us that a good business leader must have humility and a sense of humor to be successful.

 Birthdays Were Celebrated!

Steve Eorio and Hank Walther shown celebrating their birthdays by trying out for rock superstar positions at the latest ZZ Top Tour. The band was very impressed with their steely singing voices, but were advised that their  beards were too short.
