The Rotary Classic 2002

This year’s golf classic was brought back to the Ojai Valley Inn and Country Club by popular demand. We had five foursomes competing for bragging rights and prizes, and the day turned out to be great for golf. It was a cool 60 degrees and, as always, the Ojai Country Club was in great condition. We even got a chance to play Ojai's lost two holes.

After golf, Chair Bill Aspinwall gave out awards for the prestigious John English Award (lowest handicap golfer), The President’s Cup (lowest Callaway score), and lowest team scores. This is the second year that a trophy was given in honor of long time Rotarian and golfer, the late George Ishizuka

This year's winners were:

Our official photographer caught some stop action shots on some of our superstar Rotarian golfers. We were also lucky enough to have an expert analyst comment on their swings. Other pictures show how Rotary helps build friendships and develop strong relationships.

Bill Aspinwall is shown just after striking the ball. Bill's hands are fully uncocked with his left wrist maintaining a position parallel to his left arm. Notice how about 85% of his weight has shifted to his left side, and his body remains slighting behind the ball. Even with this huge unleash of power, Bill is still completely relaxed. Bill is able to consistently drive the ball 265 yards or more--and straight! I am predicting that Bill will shine on the long par 5's today !

Myles Pritchard is shown demonstrating a complete follow through. Notice Myles hands have "turned over" with his right arm fully extended and his left elbow shown beginning to fold in.

Myles is a master at target golf and is expected to do excellent on the many Ojai fairways that have a barranca running through the middle.

Jon Kemp believes that the way to win a golf match is to have the best short game, and here Jon is shown demonstrating the art of "touch" when approaching the green. On this shot Jon put a perfect pitch of 65 yards within a foot or so of the pin. Jon has been known to take the wind out of the sail of many an opponent when hitting from slightly outside of the green's fringe.

Watch out when Jon gets close!

Dick Rice shows off his expertise in the short game. Dick is shown just after striking a ball with his Callaway "Big Bertha" 8 iron. The shot was crisp, creating a lot of back spin. His ball held the green perfectly at a range of about 135 yards.

Dick, you are a short game wizard!

What a beautiful place! As you can see in the back ground this course is covered with hundreds of thousand year old California Oak Trees. This picture was taken on the 10th green - shown starting left: Spyros Dellaportas, Larry Maher, Charlie Wiese, Harmon Sieff, and Chet Hoover.

Some people just like to have fun! Two of our non golfers - Spyros Dellaportas and Allan Young. (Hey guys, were is  Carol Jackson with the cookies?)
Our Chair Bill Aspinwall is shown raising his right hand promising to Chair this event for next year. Bill's witness is Rotary Alumni Eric Brandin.

Larry Maher is shown smiling after receiving the President's Cup for lowest Rotarian Callaway net score. Larry credited his win to throwing away his driver and using his 2 iron instead .
This years winner of the prestigious John English Award was Monte Herring. This award is for the Rotarian golfer with the lowest net score after handicap. Also Shown in the picture are (in lower left of screen) Rick Kennedy, and Dick Rice.

All smiles! Robert Segal, the championship team captain, Harmon Sieff (center), and Rotary Alumni Mark Olsen. Harmon is demonstrating the look of determination that helped him win the George Ishizuka Good Guy Award.
