FRIDAY, OCTOBER 08, 2004 PROGRAM

Harry Jacobs will discuss “The Corporate Poll Worker Program”, which is a partnership between the county and corporations to improve corporate visibility and provide an easy way for civic-minded corporations to serve their communities, provide corporate recognition and provide a way to better serve the people of the county.  It also leads to increased civic participation/awareness by the employees of the corporation and improved access to the voting process for all our citizens.

OUR CLUBS NON-PARTISIAN PHILOSOPHY

Our October 01, 2004, speaker Robert Kaufman’s political philosophy presentation was absolutely brilliant.  However, since we are in the home stretch of our very spirited national political season, I believe we should receive a balanced view of this important subject matter, relative to current events.  Our Vice-Presidents, Hank Walther and Jon Kemp are planning for and will secure a program October 22, 2004 to provide this balance. Please refer to Club Policies and Procedures article #4, paragraphs 3.1 through 3.3:

4.3.1:   The general welfare of the community, the nation and the world is a concern to the members of this club, and the merits of any public question involving such welfare shall be proper subjects of fair and intelligent study and discussion at a club meeting for the enlightenment of the members in forming their own individual opinions.  However, this club shall not express an opinion on any controversial public issues.

4.3.2:   This club shall not endorse or recommend any candidates for public office and shall not discuss at any club meeting the merits or demerits of any such candidates.

4.3.3:   This club shall neither adopt nor circulate resolutions or views, nor take corporate action dealing with local, national or world affairs, or international policies of political nature.

SANTA MONICA COLLEGE

This past week has been an active period respective of our fine Santa Monica College.  Thursday evening, September 30, 2004, our Past President Richard Lawrence, who is presently President of the SMC Associates, presided over its annual membership celebration.  This event was held at the Santa Monica Masonic Center, and arranged by another special Rotarian, Judy Neveau.  In attendance were several of our Rotarians many of whom are members of the board of directors of this association.

Friday, October 01, 2004, Piedad Robertson (the College President and Rotarian since 1995) was highly honored at the 17th annual Heritage Award dinner.  The College, under Piedad’s leadership and her team has achieved National Prominence, and more importantly provides many, many people a great opportunity of personal scholastic achievement.  Congratulation Piedad, your honor is our honor.

On Friday, October 29, 2004, our Rotary program will celebrate Santa Monica College 75th anniversary with Piedad providing our program.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS AND (TICKET SALES)

Just a friendly reminder to all, that you consider buying as many tickets as you may choose to support the Rotary International Foundation.  Thus far, our membership support has reached approximately $6,500.  Our theoretically ideal achievement, historically speaking would be about 12,000 dollars at the conclusion of this fund raising drive.  To date we are doing quite well, these funds will be used for the support of the Polio Eradication Fund, worldwide.  Thank you for your support thus far, and for your future contributions.  Please see Marvin Levin and or Hal Quigley to facilitate your further contributions.

OUR CLUB SALUTES TWO GREAT ROTARY COMMITTEES

INTERNET COMMITTEE (WEB SITE)

www.rotaryclubofsantamonica.org

Larry Maher, chairman and founder, with committee members, Susan Annett, Bill Aspinwall, Kathy Dodson, Hal Quigley, James Reidy, and Tish Tisherman continue to honor themselves and our club with the most outstanding website ever.  The style and substance is unparalleled and reflective of the personalities and qualities of the entire team.  Keep up the outstanding work.

OUR ROTARACT AND INTERACT COMMITTEES

Myles Pritchard, and Tish Tisherman co-chairs, and their committee members, Steve Alexis, Alan Glick, Con Oyler, Gerry Smallwood, and Jay Smith continue to sponsor and inspire our youth of today, and leaders of tomorrow.  We were privileged to have several Rotaract members at our meeting on October 01, 2004, can you imagine how lucky these young adults are to have the above Rotarians (as mentors) to steer and guide them.  What a rewarding contribution this committee is making.

MEET OUR ASSISTANT GOVERNOR

Our Rotary Club of Santa Monica has provided our District 5280, three Assistant Governors within the past three years.  Past President John Lehne, 2002-2003, Past President Hal Quigley 2003-2004 and Past President Bill Crookston, this year 2004-2005. These gentlemen have performed valuable services to Rotary in general, and our district in particular.  Please refer to the enclosure insert for Bill Crookston’s Bio.

FINES ARE NOT ALWAYS FAIR

Past President Spyros Dellaportas, (a Paul Harris fellow and Rotarian since 1981) was recognized as the

Chili-Cook Off, Gold Medal Winner.  He was fined one dollar for loosing one tooth while cooking.  Spyros credits the tooth loss as adding flavor to his Chili recipe. (I do not even want to think about that).  He was further fined 32 dollars for the new pair of dentures, which the club provided him, for a grand total of 33 dollars –FAIR FINE

Rev. Joe Metoyer highly acclaimed minister of A.C.T.S. (a church that studies) was fined $50.00 for spending his birthday (9/24) in Paradise, (Hawaii) for 5 days.  Joe, Happy Birthday - FAIR FINE.

Hank Walther, V.P. of programs this year was fined $60 for celebrating his 60th milestone birthday, and  $15 for being tardy to our meeting.  Congratulations on being on my side of 60.  FAIR FINE

Now comes the UNFAIR part.  Your President was fined by Past President Bill Fritzsche $201 for being the ONLY male in a theater of 200 ladies attending a musical comedy, “MENOPAUSE”.  By the way June, how did Mr. Fritzsche get this information?   (Lionel was with his wife Elza, family friend Harriet, June “TATTLETALE” Doy, Rotary executive secretary. It is true he attended the play, however Ms. “TATTLETALE” Doy did not mention that HE was the designated driver and also bought dinner after.  Additionally, Lionel claims he is a victim of “ double jeopardy”, as this was his second menopausal experience, which was a lot easier then the first.  THIS FINE WAS NOT FAIR==you be the judge.

SEPTEMBER BOARD ACTION

Elsa Kuecker’s membership was cancelled; regrettably, she could not meet the attendance requirements.

Susan Dawson requested a one-month leave of absence. This request for September was approved.
