SANTA MONICA COLLEGE 75TH DIAMOND ANNIVERSERY

This small multi-faceted place of learning, with humble beginnings, has grown to be a real gem in the educational community.  Its luster continues to radiate with quality and brilliance, and we thank our college founders, fore fathers, present administrators and facility, (many of whom were and are now Santa Monica Rotarians) for this wonderful collegiate gift.

For many of us we may consider it nearly a family celebration, as our ties are strong and memorable with our deepest appreciation for what we have received.  As for my self, the majority of my studies were in the engineering field, along with the necessary requirements, which I treasure now.  I am pleased to say my two- year college program was one of the best six years of my life. I thank the college for their tolerance.  The student association fee was all of two dollars per semester.

Dr. Piedad Robertson will master our ceremonies and help us to celebrate this happy occasion Friday. Piedad, a Santa Monica Rotarian since 1995 was appointed Superintendent-President of the college on July 01, 1995.

Dr. Robertson has established herself as a leader in innovative educational programs, workforce and economic development, fundraising, community and government relations, planning, and effective management in all that she pursues.

Dr. Robertson was born in Cuba, she received her B.A & M.A. from the university of Miani and her Ed.D from Florida Atlantic University.  She resides in Santa Monica with her husband Bill.  Thank you Piedad for your continuing service to the college and our community.

NUMERO UNO

In any language, anywhere, anytime this defines The Rotary Club of Santa Monica.  Yes indeed, we where the number one club in district #5280 in annual programs fund giving to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International for the year 2003-2004.

Additional, we where also very high contributors of our selfless energies in many other areas of service in which we may take solace.  I congratulate our club members for these many other notable achievements.

FIRESIDE CHAT

Quarterly our New Member Induction/Fireside committee chaired by PP Dick Lawrence and Vice Chairman PP John Bohn with committee members Karen Baker, PP Spyros Dellaportas, Sue Hartenbaum, PP John Lehne, PP John McIntire, Con Oyler, PP Dick Rice and PP Herb Roney; conduct an evening gathering with our newer Rotarians.  This meeting is generally held in a Rotarians home.

This past meeting October 20, 2004, was held in Michelle and Connolly Oyler’s home, committee members in attendance were John Bohn, Dick Lawrence, John McIntire, Con Oyler, Herb Roney, and Lionel Ruhman.   New members attending were Merv Hect, Mark Herrier, Hirko Ikeda, Mitchell Kraus, Sally Pai and Scott Wagenseller.  Also assisting with this friendly induction evening was June Doy our executive secretary.

After self-introductions and a warm welcome by Dick Lawrence, Herb Honey presented a very comprehensive historical and traditional snap shot of our club.  John Bohn guided us through our organizational structure.

He explained Board Make-Up, Election Process, Selection of President Elect, Annual Budget, Club Operations, Club Service, Pledges and. Fines.  District Purpose, Function and Activities, (The number and sizes of clubs and their geographical limits in the area).  Our district #5280 comprises the greater Los Angeles area with approximately 49 clubs presently.

We where then apprised of the Rotary International Foundation, History, Major Projects, IE Polo Plus, Wheel Chair Foundation, Literacy Program, Paul Harris Fellowship and other items of interest. John also discussed briefly our Santa Monica Rotary Club Foundation, its history, its purpose and its accomplishments.  We thank our host’s Mitchell and Con for their graciousness and opening their home to us.

F.D.R could not have held a better Fireside Chat.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“ THE PURSUIT OF PERFECTION IS WHAT KEEPS THINGS FROM GETTING DONE’.

 BY: Former Mayor Richard Riordan

A THOUGHT FOR A LIFE TIME--SOME WRITINGS REMAIN STYLISH AND CONTEMPORARY

DESIDERATA

"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.  As far as possible, without surrender be on good terms with all persons.  Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and less informed; they too have their story.  Avoid loud and aggressive persons,  they are vexations to the spirit.  If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.  Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.  Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.  But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.  Be yourself.  Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.  Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.  Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.  But do not distress yourself with imaginings.  Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.  Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.  You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.  And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.  Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.  With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.  Be careful.  Strive to be Happy."
