"2004/2005"
ISSUE NO. 24 May 17, 2005 OUR 83rd YEAR
www.RotaryClubofSantaMonica.org
Dear Fellow Rotarians, I regret to inform you that one of our Rotarians stars Donald McDaniel has been called to greater service.
We will all miss this very pleasant fellow and consider ourselves fortunate to have made his acquaintance. “Soft & safe to thee Donald be thy resting place. Bright and glorious be thy rising from it.” Farewell, Donald, farewell … Lionel
Our Invocator, Nat Trives quoted Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Cowardice asks the question, it is safe?
Expediency asks the question, it is polite?
Vanity asks the question, is it popular?
But conscience asks the question, is it right?
And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor polite,
nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”
Song leader, Herb Rooney led the club through his version of “Wait till the sun shines Nellie,” the rousing refrain was more like this:
Wait till the dethroning,Lionel
When the Club will say Good-bye
We’ll be so happy, Lionel, don’t you cry
Down memory lane we’ll wander, Rotary, you and I
Wait till the dethroning Lionel, bye, bye, bye
Harris Levy introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians: Richard Keagy; David Boochever and Donn Ennis (a refinery engineer) at which point Harris actually asked if it was too late for him to be refined. Harris, any more refinement and we would not know what to do with you! Talking of refinement, we had the opportunity to meet Leonard and Marlene Alexander the very proud parents of our Jillian who will be the first GSE team leader from our Club. Also visiting was Gurusimran Khalsa and Mike Dischke. The announcements came next with Paul Leoni reminding everyone to get in their pledge sheets ASAP; Jim Dyer was there to say it’s just about the end of the line for Lionel but the clock is ticking and the drug-dealer is on the way. Oh my, Paul … looks like you’re going to have a very interesting year! Ann Greenspun and Klaus Mennekes congratulated our birthday Rotarians with a gift and song. A special “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” to June Doy who is AWOL ... probably lying in the sun right now with Hal and Kai-Li Quigley.
Another tradition broken in Lionel’s year … this is the first time in 83 years that we have a pregnant Rotarian. Congratulations Kathy! I don’t know it appeared to all of you, but I think the men felt a little left out when the Rotary Women got together to bathe Kathy and her unborn son with Rotarian fun. So, they all chipped in and Lionel presented Kathy with a $4 rose and a $15 box of candy. Guess it still pays to get pregnant, huh Kathy? With this going on, there was still time for fines. Mike Nichols was given the opportunity to help Rotary to the tune of $100 and Bob Klein doubled the pleasure with a $200 fine. Dee Menzies felt that Lionel was being left out, so reminiscent of days gone by, she led us through a little math lesson “Let’s see you were gone 4 days for district conference at $25 a day, how much would that be?” she queried. Oh, and by the way … congratulations on receiving the Governor’s Award of Excellence – which Lionel was not fined for.
Willcommen: This past Friday the 13th (which actually turned out to be a very good day) we had the pleasure of hosting the Group Study Exchange Team – District 1940. Club Assembly: Thank you Iao for hosting our Club Assembly it is very important that Iao Katagiri has everyone’s name who will be attending, or they will not let you in the building. The new RAND headquarters -- 1776 Main Street -- is located just south of its old building. The entrance to the underground parking garage is across from the courthouse. Driving south on Main Street from Colorado Avenue it is a right turn into the driveway. Tell the attendant at the booth that you have a meeting with Iao Katagiri. The attendant will direct you to visitor parking. There is no charge for parking. No parking chits are issued. Elevators to the courtyard are located in the center of the garage. Press "G." As you exit the elevator, the lobby will be to your right. The guard will check the list for your name and will direct you to the meeting room, which for the May 25th meeting will be a room that is just past the reception desk. Bring photo I.D. When leaving, just pull up to the wooden arm and it will automatically lift. If the meeting runs long for some reason and the booth is empty, just pull up to the arm anyway. Potato Chips
A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived,
so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of root beer
and started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old
woman. She was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat
down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his
root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her
some chips. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so
pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer.
Again, she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon
eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As twilight approached, the boy
realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more
than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gave her a
hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his
own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his
face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?" He
replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added,
"You know what? She's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!" Meanwhile,
the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned
by the look of peace on her face and he asked, "Mother, what did you do today
that made you so happy?" She replied! "I ate potato chips in the park with
God."
However, before her son responded, she added, "You know, he's much younger than
I expected."
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace all equally! Have lunch with God … and don’t forget the chips.
Respectfully Submitted, RoseMary Regalbuto

the good they do is inconceivable." -- Joseph Addison
