Rotary Club of Santa Monica

Prior Meetings

March - April 2003

On 4-25-03, Administrative Assistant's day was topped off by a fashion show that featured many of our members showing off the latest styles. What a program! Much thanks goes out to this year's Chair Diane Margolin
Our Master of Ceremonies the "brought to you guy" Brent Seltzer.

The new craze is the "Super Hero look". Our Super Heroes are  PP Herb Rooney as "Magneto" and Karen Baker as "Storm".
"Mr. Casual" Nat Trives  is shown modeling the latest  fashion for the relaxed Panama look. You don't have to look too closely to see on Nat's face how much he enjoys Rotary and being one of our model "superstars".

We honored our teachers, firefighters, and police on 4/11/03. This weeks pictures are brought to us thanks to the digital wizardry of Tish Tisherman!

Our member John Deasy, superintendent of Schools, introduces this years teacher of the year Mary Hirt. Of Mary's many accomplishments she has been recognized as California's outstanding physical educator and physical education teacher  of the year.
Fire Chief Ettore Berardinelli introduced Sarah Billman as Firefighter of the Year. She not only serves as a firefighter, but also a paramedic. Her skills are not only physical, but organizational. She rewrote the training and policy manual so that there would be a comprehensive written reference and "how to" guide for the staff.

Our member and Police Chief Jim Butts and Chair Paul Gaulke (Rotary's funniest member) introduced Detective of the Year Virginia Obenchain. Her duties include investigations in  narcotics, vice, robbery and homicide. Through  Virginia's amazing efforts the City was able to obtain numerous major convictions.

Not only did we have Rick Auerbach, our Los Angeles County Assessor for lunch on 4/4/03, we inducted 8 new members into our club!
After an interesting presentation Rick addressed questions from the audience. Harmon Sieff asked if  personal artwork that is displayed at one's business is taxed. Rick's answer was yes. Rick suggested, in order to avoid taxation, to take the artwork home.

On 3/28/03 California's First Lady, Sharon Davis Helped Us Kick Off Literacy Week

Standing next to the First Lady is on the left  District Governor Rick Mendoza and President Bill Crookston. Mrs. Davis, who published her first children’s book, “The Adventures of Capitol Kitty,” has visited schools around the state to promote reading and literacy.

Computer Security expert Stan Stahl was our guest for lunch on 3/21/03.  We also celebrated "Past Presidents' Day" with the help of PP Dick Lawrence

Shown on the left is PP John Bohn and on the right standing next to his buddy Stan, is Dave Bohn.  Do you really think your computer is secure when you pay bills on line, do you ever give your credit card and social security information on line? Stan warned that these transactions could lead to some major problems such as identity theft.

The Santa Monica Jaycees co-hosted with us the " Distinguished Service Award" Lunch on 3/14/03

Super Bankers Dick Lawrence on the left and John McIntire on the right are shown standing next to this year's winner Kathy Irby. Kathy was honored for all of her volunteer work in the community. Among many of her accomplishments, she chaired last years Kiwanis golf tournament which raised over $25,000 for the Santa Monica Police Activities League.

Our Speaker on 3/7/03 was Mark Morocco M.D. medical supervisor for NBC's hit series "ER".

Myles Prichard on the right congratulates Mark for a great presentation. Mark told us over 20 to 40 million people watch "ER" on an average night.  One of our traditions is to sing at every meeting. Well I think that I have discovered new Rotary talent - Rotary's  newest singing group - "Katagiri and Tisherman" aka Iao Katagiri and Tish Tisherman.
