| September 23, 2005 - Dr. Lynn E. Davis asks the question: HAVE IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN STRETCHED THE U.S. ARMY TOO THIN? |
|
|
| Frequent troop deployments to Iraq and
Afghanistan have stretched the U.S. Army so thin that many active-duty
combat units are spending more than one of every two years on foreign
battlefields, leaving few brigades ready to respond to crises elsewhere.
If the heavy demands continue for overseas rotations, serious problems in
active unit readiness could arise. When soldiers have little time at home
they have less time to develop new war-fighting capability or to stand
ready for military contingencies that may require rapid response. In
addition, extended deployments reduce the quality of life for soldiers and
their families, threatening Army recruiting and retention.
Dr. Davis, a senior political analyst at RAND, served as Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs from 1993-1997. Be at lunch to hear Dr. Davis ponder the question whether our troops are stretched too thin. |

Saturday - Sunday, July 23-24, 2005: Relay for Life @ Santa Monica College

Our team is beginning to shape up, but we still need more people. We've collected over $2000.00 so far with donations coming in online and by snail mail. Our goal is $10,000.00! I am attaching the waiver which must be signed and either returned to me on Friday, or faxed to me by Monday (310 943-6860) in order for all of you to avoid long lines for registration. As long as I have the completed information, I'll be able to turn it in on Tuesday at the Team Captain's Bank Night. Some of you have sent me the waiver form already. I will receive all t-shirts, id tags, and registration info so that all we have to do is enter the field and set up and start. If you are fundraising, please make sure to turn your checks in to me before the day of Relay.
I also need the times that these team members are willing to participate. Here's the roster so far!
Captain Tish and Skip Tisherman, Rosemary Regalbuto, Paul and Marilyn Leoni, Gillian Alexander, Nat Trives, June Doy, Dee Menzies, Judy Neveau, Karen Baker, Eric Jorgensborg and Kathy Crookston.
Come on Rotarians - join in on the fun! There will be all sorts of "carnival" events going on throughout the day and night. There will be a camp for kids, music, dance lessons, auctions, crafts for sale and movies overnight! Bring your families and friends and kids! Are you recruiting new members for the club? What a great opportunity to see us in action! Help us to be "of service" to our friends, families and fellow Rotarians fighting cancer and to honor those who have lost the battle!
