Rotary Club of Santa Monica

Meetings and Pictures

March/April 2004

New Members - we want to see your smiling faces!

Thanks for sharing the memories - new members Mike Hyler and Tom Larmore on 4/30/04

VP Nat Trives (left) is shown next to "Craft Talker" Mike Hyler. Mike feels right at home because he was our first Craft talker allowed to give his talk directly from his office. You guessed it, Mike is the Riviera Country Club Manager. Besides being a great club manager, we found out that Mike loves to fly and is licensed to fly not only small planes, but he also holds a commercial pilot's license.

Our second "Craft Talker" for the Day was Tom Larmore.

Tom's classification is "Law Govermental". Tom is an expert in real estate transactional analysis and loves to solve problems when dealing with our Local government. You may remember Tom when he spoke to us a number of years ago prior to joining our club. If you search this Web you will see pictures of Tom talking to us about the "Living Wage Measure".

New Member Don McDaniel Celebrates His Birthday!

Say hello to one of our newest members, and one of Santa Monica's finest attorneys Don McDaniel. Don was a long time member of the Rotary Club of Pacific Palisades and recently transferred to our club. Don's specialty is estate planning.

On 4/23/04 we celebrated Administrative Assistants' Day. A pat on the back goes out to Chairperson Karen Baker for putting on such  a grand event. She arranged to have door prizes for all of our assistants. She raffled off a number of super prizes. As a special treat she arranged for a trainer who helps in employee employer relationships to speak to us.

Madelon Miles, a Master Certified Executive Coach, presented an awesome program regarding ways to facilitate and sustain outstanding relationships with our employees.

Greg Hargrave and his great assistant Carol MacDonald

Larry Maher's assistant Ted Conrad loves his raffle prize of a $25 gift certificate to "Earth Wind and Flour" restaurant. A big thank you goes out to Ted for his awesome help during  CPA Larry's Tax Season. Ted is also the guy who does a great job helping Larry keep this Web site up to date.

On April 2, 2004 our Public Servants were Honored!
Thank you Lorraine Jossel for doing such a great job chairing this event!

On 3/26/04 Dr. Ali Modarres spoke to us on issues related to "Immigration & the City"

Ali made us think when he explained that  on the average children of U.S. immigrants earn more money than those who have been in the U.S. for several generations.
Susan Hartenbaum is elated when she was voted as this year's belly dancer competition winner. (Stay tuned Susan, our web reporters, and photographers, will be reporting more fully on this momentous event!)

On 3/12/04 - Jo Anne Van Tilburg, Ph.D. who is the world’s leading expert on Easter Island statues, talked to us. She talked about how civilization started on Easter Island about 1200 years ago. She explained how about 150 travelers arrived there on boats. These travelers and their ancestors  flourished there for a time . The population  increased from  the original explorers of 150 to over 15,000. The tiny Island's resources could not support this many people. The overpopulation started such practices as cannibalism and murder which led to the ultimate demise of their civilization.

Jo Anne who is an anthropologist, reminded us that there may be a lesson to  be learned here.

It's Craft Talk Time With Jillian Alexander!

On 3/5/04 Jillian gave us her fantastic presentation. We learned that Jillian is a native of California who loves volunteer work and wants to give back to the community. She owns her own business and  is a Principal of Corporate Development & Strategy, with Conduit Consulting LLC. She is shown with one of our favorite Reverends Bill Wood (left), and world famous broadcaster and PPJack Siegal. (By the way, I like this picture!)
Annie Bird spoke to us. She is  our Ambassadorial Scholar who is just back from Buenos Aires. She told us a little about her learning experiences while studying over in Argentina.
