| Karen Baker introduced Dr. Myron Taylor, who was our guest speaker for lunch on 2/27/04. Myron gave us a very moving presentation when he talked to us about business ethics and the "Four Way Test". He told us that there is "no substitute for integrity". |
| We held our annual Esther M. Johnson,
Music Awards Program on February 20, 2004 at the Masonic Center
in Santa Monica. The program featured four talented young artists from local
high schools.
Hee-Seung Lee, 12th Grade Student from New Roads High School, playing Scherzo Op.31 No. 2 by Chopin on the piano held the audience with a flawless performance that earned her 1st Place and a $500 check; Luka G. Oida , 11th Grade Student from Malibu High School performed Masks Op. 40 by Robert Muczynski on the piano with technical excellence tying Micah K. Schub, 12th Grade Student from Santa Monica High School who performed Concerto #1 by Koussevitzky on Bass, for the 1st Runner-up position and a $200 check for each performer; and Taran A. Huffman, 10th Grade Student from Concord High School played two pieces on Clarinet, one: Pastourelle by Maurice Faillenot and the other: Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copeland earning a 2nd Runner-Up position and a $100.00 check. The three judges were Rotarians: Patricia A. Bofird, Nancy Freedman and Monika White Please mark your calendars because all four winners will be invited back on Friday, June 4, 2004 to receive their plaques for today’s performance while joining the Rotary Club of Santa Monica’s scholastic and service awards winners on that day. ....Nathaniel Trives P.S. | What a meeting! On 2/13/04 we had nationally recognized environmental attorney Gail Ruderman Feuer speak to us. Also, we inducted new members, and recognized Rotary Foundation Benefactors. | |
| Gail tells us that the good news is that the smog condition in the Los Angeles area has gotten a lot better over the last 30 years. She tells us the bad news is that there are still major cancer causing agents in the air. She explained that about 71% of this condition is caused by diesel fuel burning engines. | |

| Dr. Conrad amazed us when he talked about the advances in disease prevention. He explained with the use of DNA, such illnesses as Breast Cancer or Colon Cancer may be caught in it's early stages. Early detection save lives! | Judy Neveau, Tom Larmore, and Larry Maher were caught cracking up while celebrating their January birthdays. Since they were such good little boys and girls, they were each given a $25 AMC Theatre gift certificate. |
