Rotary Club of Santa Monica

"2001/2002 - A Rotary Odyssey"

Prior Meetings

Our resident Jujitsu expert Bill Randle was our guest speaker for lunch on 4/26/02. Bill introduced us to a dozen or more of his students who gave us one super demonstration on the art of Jujitsu. Bill is a 9th degree black belt in Jujitsu. Actually a 9th degree entitles Bill to wear the "Red Belt", one of a few people in the world  who have earned this honor!

Bill demonstrated that the art of Jujitsu is not strength, but technique and leverage. Note that the  blur in the picture  proves either one of two things:

Bill's blinding fast speed is too fast to be caught by our camera or,

Your digital cameraman has no idea how to take "action pictures".

Bill shown with President Hal Quigley. Bill has trained thousands of students over the years at the Westside Family YMCA Jujitsu program. He explained how the program helps build character in a young student. Our "birthday boys" Dick Hart and Past President Nat Charnley are shown waiting in line to try out the new "rolling techniques" just learned from Bill's students.
President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

Bill Vaughn:  One trouble with growing older is that it gets progressively tougher to find a famous historical figure who didn't amount to much when he was your age.

Mark Twain:  No man's property is sage while Congress is in session.

Tennessee Williams:  In memory, everything seems to happen to music.

Our Middle School Kids told us about "The Four Way Test" on 4/19/02

Shown starting at left -Chairperson Joyce Khoury, 1st Place winner Calthorp School Sable Worthy, Headmistress Calthorp Dee Menzies,  2nd place Calthorp Jennifer May, and 3rd place Calthorp Alex Wittenberg.   Shown starting at left - 3rd Place winner John Adams Middle School (JAMS) Jonathan King, 2nd place (JAMS) Julia Keighley, 1st Place (JAMS) Esther Andersen ,  and Jami Orlowski Counselor (JAMS). (By the way 1st Place winner Esther is dedicating this picture to her brother)
President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

Ralph Waldo Emerson:   A friend is one before whom I may think aloud.

Our guest speaker for Secretary Administrative Assistant's Day on 4/12/02 was  Angi Ma Wong also known as the "Feng Shui Lady"
Angi is shown with past president Herb . Angi told us that opportunity does not always "knock", sometimes it just whispers.  Committee  persons Diane Margolin and Norma Barnes shown hard at work delivering presents to those lucky Secretary's and Admin Assistants in attendance. One of our  clubs finest attorneys Harmon Sieff shown with his assistant Elaine Stone.

Hal Quigley was mysteriously missing from our meeting on 4/6/02. Rumors have it that he was at his office working on ways to increase the alternative minimum tax levies on members at next meeting.  Because of Hal's absence our meeting was masterfully conducted by VP George Collins. George introduced our Guest speaker James Allen Smith who gave us many examples of what makes a "Global Civil Society"
George called upon memory expert Dick Rice to recite the names of our clubs recent new members. Dick impressed us all when he not only gave us the names of the dozen or so new members, he also pronounced their names perfectly.

Speaking of new members shown to the right  is newest member Blair Brandenburg who is president of "Network Solutions International, Inc.". This is a computer systems consulting firm. His office is on Pico Blvd. in Santa Monica and he lives in Santa Monica.

Blair, welcome to our club!

Our own John Lehne was our guest speaker for lunch on 3/22/02. We also inducted 7 new members into our club. District Governor Len Wasserstein would be proud!
Past president John Lehne talked about the British Army in the 1800's. John is pictured showing to us one of his collection of British Army Rifles. You can see it all over new member John Deasy's face as to how proud he is to be inducted into the Rotary Club of Santa Monica. He is receiving his Rotary pin from Judy Neveau. More smiles, as new member Joey Perlmutter is congratulated by sponsors Dick Rice and Nat Trives.
President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

James Agate: The English instinctively admire any man who has no talent and is modest about it.

David Jordan:  The world stands aside to let anyone pass who knows where he is going.

Dan Bennett:  There's nothing wrong with the younger generation that becoming taxpayer's won't cure.

Aldous Huxley:   That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that History has to teach.
