Prior Meetings 

 

Past President Bill Hunt filled in for President Hal Quigley for lunch on 5/3/02. Bill turned what is usually "Aloha Day" into "Farmer's Day". He told us  "you don't have to be a farmer to be outstanding in your field". Our guest speakers for the day were "Craft Talkers" Kathy Dodson and Myles Pritchard.   
Kathy Dodson recently became the Executive Director of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce. Last year she  moved here from Texas. Kathy is one of our younger members who is  looking forward to all of the twists and turns that her future may bring.  Myles Pritchard explained to us that he is a 7th generation Bahamian, who recently moved here. He is employed as  an Investment Protection Specialist at Merrill Lynch, he loves sports and  participated in the 1996 Olympics. Myles also enjoys working on community projects and can't wait to get involved in RCSM Committees. Past President Schiller Colberg cracks up as "Farmer" Bill Hunt receives a bag of carrots from Jim Menzies. Bill explains that he will use the carrots to feed his 3 legged pig of which is is very fond of. (If you missed this meeting be sure and ask Bill about his pig)

 

Hal Fishman anchor man for “News @ Ten” on Channel 5 was  our speaker on 3/15/02. Everyone listened so intently that you could have heard a pin drop as Hal talked to a "sold out" crowd.

Hal Fishman shown with VP George Collins and Pres. Hal Quigley. Mr. Fishman gave us many examples of how fast decisions must be made on a live newscast. He explained that he had only 30 minutes to make the life changing  decision to run the "Rodney King Tapes". After our meeting our reporters caught up with new member  Oded Wolf. He is the President and CEO of Wolf Diamonds, Inc. The Company is a leading importer and purveyor of diamonds. Prior to starting his import business, he served time in the Israeli Army. Oded is married, and he and his wife Ruth live in Brentwood.

 "Craft Talkers" Karim Jaude and Tulin Ozkaragoz were our speakers for lunch on 3/8/02

Karim is congratulated for his presentation by "Mr Perfect Attendance" Frank Blenkhorn. Karim is a "Master Business Trainer". He explained how he showed one of his clients how to work less hours, see his family more, and make more money! Karim, I think I need your coaching!   Tulin who is a neurological psychologist explained how she loves to do clinical research. She is currently researching a gene that could be a cause of alcoholism and other substance abuse.

Andreas Ekman, Consul General of Sweden in Los Angeles was our guest speaker for lunch on 3/1/02

Andreas shared with us many fascinating facts about the Nobel Prize. He explained that over the last 10 years about 25% of the Nobel prizes awarded in Technology were to residents of California.

He's Back!

Past president Kent Colberg  explained to us that he has just accepted a new position with A G Edwards, and is  moving his investment counseling business from Beverly Hills back to Santa Monica. Kent was so happy, he agreed to donate $150 for Charity.

Susan Annett, Principal Librarian in Charge of Public Services was our guest speaker for lunch on 2/22/02

Susan told us that her librarians answer over 900,000 questions a year. Let's see that's 75,000 questions answered per  month, 7,250 per week, and over 520 per day! Boy am I impressed!   President Hal Quigley asked the real Monika White to stand up.

We had lunch at the Boy Scouts' Camp Josepho on 2/15/02. Our own Boy Scout Executive Hugh Travis and his staff gave us a little history of this camp and other camps in the local area.

The Rotary Club of Santa Monica held its 5th annual Esther Johnson Music Awards on 2/8/02. This meeting gave us a whole new meaning of music appreciation.

Eddie was honored for his rendition of Chopin's Ballade No. 1 Op23.  Pictured starting from the left is New Road High School student Winifred Olliff, first place winner from New Roads Piano Academy  Dennis Leung, and Chair Nat Trives. Winifred was honored for her rendition of Beethoven's Sonata in d minor, Op.31. Dennis was honored for his rendition of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6.
