LA2008, the 99th Rotary International Convention will be in Los Angeles June 15-18, 2008.   Working together with the other 378 Rotary Clubs across the 7 Host Districts, our goal is to make this the "Best convention ever".  We encourage all of our members to follow the Host Organizing Committee 4 Way Test:

  1. Register NOW for LA2008

  2. Purchase Host Event Tickets

  3. Be a Host for Home Hospitality

  4. Become a volunteer!

Our Club Promotion Chairs, Simon Hunter and Mitchell Kraus, have organized a committee to lead our participation, with special emphasis on Monday night Host Hospitality.

Purchase LA2008 Host Event Tickets:

Recognizing we live in the entertainment capital of the world, you won't be surprised to hear that we are offering a fantastic set of events that you won't want to miss.  On Saturday evening we have "California Experience" at the new LA Live & Nokia Theater, catered by Wolfgang Puck, followed by entertainment with Steve Tyrell and Natalie Cole.  Monday evening will be Home Host Hospitality night.  Since we are hosting, you won't need to purchase a ticket here.  Then on Tuesday evening we have "Concert Under the Stars" at Hollywood Bowl.  How about if you organize a group of friends and fellow Rotarians for this event?  To purchase Host Event Tickets online, go to http://www.rotary2008.com/ticket_orders, or you can download  a LA2008 Host Events Ticket Order Form here, then FAX or mail it in.

Host Hospitality - International Family Reunion - Monday June 16th:

Host Hospitality is often the most memorable event of the convention.  We plan on hosting a combination of a group event on the Santa Monica Pier plus a number of smaller events at member homes. Combined, we are looking forward to hosting about 300 Rotarians and guests from around the world.  About half will attend the group event at the pier and the other half will join with members in their homes.  We hope all of our members and families will participate in either the pier event, or host or attend one of the many home events.

Pier event - We will greet our guests in the Carousel area around 5:30.  Rusty's will cater a BBQ dinner followed by an evening of entertainment and fellowship on the pier.  Cost:  tbd

Home events - You can sign up to host 2 to ? guests, plus a similar number of local Rotarians and guests if you choose.  While you are expected to provide dinner, this is not intended to be a gourmet extravaganza.  The highlight of the evening is the intercultural exchange and conversation with fellow Rotarians from around the world.

Transportation - We plan to use the Big Blue Bus to bring our guests from the Convention Center to Santa Monica .  Guests going to the pier will be taken directly there.  We plan to have a pick up location in Santa Monica for guests destined for individual homes.  You will pick up your guests at 5:30 and will need to bring your guests back to this location around 9:30 (time and logistics to be finalized later).  The bus will return our guests back to their individual hotels

Rotary's Wide World of Books - an LA2008 Commemorative project

The official commemorative project of LA2008 is a child literacy initiative in partnership with Reading by 9 and the Los Angeles Times. Every Rotarian attending the LA2008 Convention is being asked to donate one or more books to Rotary's Wide World of Books, which will then be distributed by to public elementary schools in Southern California and Nevada. Any language is welcome and you can insert a personal note with the name of your Rotary Club. Be part of Rotary's largest international book drive ever and help us to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records. If you need more boxes or for more information, please contact our Literacy Committee Chair Alonzo Hill.

In addition to our Club collection activities, the Host Organizing Committee has teamed with Scholastic to create a “paperless” virtual book drive. They will ship your order just in time to be included in the Mountain of Books at the 2008 Rotary International Convention. Please take advantage of this innovative, efficient and very green approach to donate to Rotary’s Wide World of Books.  Click here for more information and an order form.

More information will follow here and in the RotaMonica.  If you have questions or want to help on this committee, please contact Mitchell or Simon.
