Activities for November 2002

Our Rotary Club is at it again. The District Governor awarded Rotary of Santa Monica an A+ after his site visit. He was especially pleased with the finest Club Information Guide ever published, thanks to Tom Loo, who compiled it. Distinctions were also heaped on Dave Rimr, MD, for his incredible programs. Our Santa Monica Club has had presentations made by the likes of Gil Garcetti, Paul Westphal, Ambassador Jim Hodgson, Steven Sample, Ph.D., and Richard Riordan. Pretty impressive.
The Social Security Administration also got in its two cents. The SSA gave kudos to our Robert Segal for his new website, citing it as one of the ‘best non-profit, non-commercial links on the web focusing on mental health and aging well.’
Raising funds is one of the things we do best. Due to Marv Levin’s gently persuasive manner, we raised $7,540 to fund additional Paul Harris Fellowships, insuring that scholarships will continue to be awarded to the deserving young people in our community. The Community and Youth Grants Committee, as co-chaired by Nancy Freedman and Kent Colberg, is accepting applications for projects that can be funded by Rotary. Priority is given to Santa Monica area non-profit organizations, and the request should be for a $1000-$3000 capital item that will have a lasting Rotary message.
And then there are the gifts of the heart. Our own Santa Monica Police Department members were served scrumptious Thanksgiving meals courtesy of Casa del Mar and Klaus Mennekes. For some people, it was no doubt better than home cooked!
November was a thankful month for Rotarians in Santa Monica. We hope yours was, too.
