Santa Monica Mirror

October 10 – 16, 2001

The Rotary Club of Santa Monica has been participating in a program sponsored by the Pacific Division of the LAPD.  Old cell phones are being collected to be programmed for free 911 Emergency Service.  They will then be donated to Sojourn Services of Santa Monica, where they will be given to battered women and women at risk.

Community Police Advisory Board representative and Rotary Club Member Harris Levey will make the presentation at the Pacific Division’s open house on Saturday, October 13, 2001.  If you have a phone you no longer use, please consider donating it.  For more information, email HarrisJL@webtv.com or call Maria at the Mirror at 577.6500.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks, retail business in the downtown Promenade area has reportedly suffered.  Retail receipts are down 4% so far this year.  There is a noticeable thinning of crowds, though some of it can be attributed to the normal end of season decline.  The hotels, once operating at near full capacity are struggling to get back to the 50& mark.  Profitability does not occur until 65% normally.

I do trust and believe that Santa Monica will continue to be a world class tourist destination.  Business might find sales slower in the short haul, yet in the long run those that chose to open shop here will mostly probably be rewarded.
