Coming Our Way
Craft talks are always a special time for us to get to know our newest members. September 20th will be one of those days. We’ll look forward to learning more about Charlie Follette and Tom Miskimen as they reveal their unique talents and interests to us.
A Terrifying Thought
One cannot overlook the sobering news delivered by Bruce Hoffman, RAND’s Corporate DC Office expert on terrorism. To put last year’s invasion of the US into perspective, Mr. Hoffman stated that since the beginning of the 20th century, only 13 terrorist incidents have killed more than 100 people at once. That places the almost 3,000 World Trade Center deaths in a league of its own, and, unfortunately, makes it an indicator of a new level of terrorism. Mr. Hoffman highlighted the depths to which Al Queda is capable of functioning as long as the leadership remains at large, essentially because the organization will continue to perform operationally in a fluid structure that allows terrorists to disband and regroup at will. Thousands of soldiers are being recruited and trained; terrorist training information is being disseminated electronically, including instructions how to behave if confronted and what to answer if interrogated. A psychological profile also reveals that as more obstacles are placed before terrorists, the more determined they are to find other means to achieve their goals. Americans must understand that: (1) terrorism is instrumental in that it has a purpose; (2) it is a form of psychological warfare; (3) the US and all democratic countries are vulnerable to attack; (4) the enmity with which terrorists view US and other democratic countries; and (5) this is a perennial struggle with no ready answers in sight.
Heads Up
The head table was graced by Myles Pritchard, who introduced visiting Rotarians and guests; Iao Katagiri, who introduced speaker Bruce Hoffman; new member Brian West, Salvation Army Chaplain; and newly-appointed President of the Santa Monica Visitor & Convention Bureau, Nat Trives, who gave the invocation.
The Welcome Mat
Visiting Rotarians Rhoda Sharp and Jim Sharp joined us from Rancho Mirage and Beverly Hills, respectively.
Visitors to our Club today were Stephan Hulbert, Linda Tisherman, Holly Johnson, Joseph Perlmutter, Uri Adar, MD, Lea Adar, Ph.D., Warren Robak, Mark Dawson, Elizabeth Astrin, David Ross, William Thomsen, Dave Cagle, Joe Whitman, and Patti Derry.
Of Significance
Jack Michel, representing the Santa Monica Rotary Foundation, had the distinction of presenting a check for $25,000 to match the $25,000 donation from our Rotary Club. The $50,000 will be used to build the Santa Monica Rotary Boys and Girls Club at John Adams Middle School. Hurray to all of you who made this possible.
Remember to fill in your ticket stubs and submit them with a $100 check to help create new Paul Harris Fellowship matching credits. By doing so you will extend the potential for additional fellowships to be established for the future.
Coastal Cleanup Day will be on September 21st. Rotarians are encouraged to participate in saving our precious environment. You’ll feel better, too.
Herb Roney’s past grandstanding paid off. He earned a big round of applause when he announced his bid for re-election to the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees.
Kathy Dodson announced that Santa Monica is holding its first “Taste of Santa Monica”, an event on the Pier that will have mini-kitchens operated by 20 different restaurants. More information can be obtained by calling Kathy at (310) 393-9825.
Santa Monica Rotary Golf Day
Save October 16th for a day of golf at the Ojai Country Club. Scratch golfers and duffers alike are encouraged to contact Bill Aspinwall at (310) 526-1750.
Fine Time
Frank Lavac, Jr., a veterinarian, had an article printed in the Santa Monica Star about his work with animals. He also knows all about license plate frames that read “Got Cat?” Just for that he’s got to cough up $200. That’s a lot of kibble.
$100 will be collected from Ed Moosebrugger for his Page One article on terrorism. Nothing funny about it.
The More Things Change…
Either the following people have changed their names, or they were misspelled in the last edition: Rev. Joe Metoyer and Bill Fritzsche. Mea culpa.
And while we’re at it, the Reverend’s new e-mail address is: 1acts@acts-santamonica.org

Imagine that every day $1,440 was automatically deposited in your bank account. The only condition was that if you didn’t spend all of it in a single day, you’d lose the unspent portion. Wouldn’t you try to use up every last penny, every single day? We do have such a bank account. It’s called Time. Every day we get 1,440 minutes to spend; the time we waste is forfeited forever. Use your time the way you’d use your money and squeeze every good minute out of every day.
