Coming Our Way

It’s a powerful combination…wealth consultant and clinical psychologist…which makes one anticipate we’ll learn about what motivates us to accumulate and spend our money.  James Gottfurcht, Ph.D., a nationally recognized business and personal coach and keynote speaker, provides step-by-step solutions to move from poverty to prosperity.  A principal of Psychology of Money Consultants in Los Angeles, he’s on the faculty of The College of Executive Coaching and UCLA Extension. With top clients like MasterCard International, Morgan Stanley, and the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants, we can look forward to his 26 years of expertise in this fascinating field to illuminate our behaviors related to money, the ultimate survival tool.

Own Up

Former Mayor Richard Riordan is a staunch believer in the need for “owners”, those who accept personal accountability, to move this society from one that projects problems elsewhere to one that successfully solves issues and moves on.  He cites two strategic areas to prove his point, education and antiterrorism, and insists that if school principals took responsibility for students, the incidence of illiterate graduates would disappear.  Likewise, the goal of antiterrorism would be enhanced if there were one central repository for criminal and suspicious behavior. Having a decision-maker at the helm, where the proverbial buck stops, is Riordan’s vision for a more functional world.

Heads Up

Lending grace to the head table were Con Oyler to introduce visiting Rotarians and guests; Piedad Robertson, Ph.D., to introduce featured speaker Richard Riordan; new member Tish Tisherman; and Kris Andresen to give the invocation.

Of Significance

•           The impressive return of our Paul Harris Fellowship opportunity drawing tickets and $100 checks has led to a second Early Bird Drawing to be held on October 9th.  Marv Levin announced that the winner of the second drawing will be awarded a complimentary two-night stay at the District Conference at the new Pachanga Resort and Casino and one full meal package.  Moreover, stubs eligible for both of the early bird drawings will also be eligible for the major drawing on November 2nd at the Paul Harris Fellowship Dinner.  Need any more incentive to get your tickets in now?

•           And speaking of the Paul Harris Fellowship Dinner, Dick Riordan generously added to the silent auction lineup by donating use of his ranch in Arizona for one week. Oh yeah, and a gift certificate for a cup of coffee at The Pantry.

•           New-ish members were treated twice this month to the benefits of being a Rotarian. On one occasion, Tom and Stephanie Loo, at their stunning Malibu home, hosted us for a Welcome Dinner. The ambiance, cuisine, and company, not to mention the extraordinary bar keeping of the dexterous Hal Quigley, made the evening a real pleasure.  It was also a treat to meet Governor Rick Mendoza, who took time from his busy schedule to greet us at sunset.

•           The second occasion, known as a ‘fireside’, took place at the home of John and June Bohn.  They too were gracious hosts as past presidents John Bohn, Bill Crookston, Dick Lawrence, John McIntire, Hal Quigley, Dick Rice, and Herb Roney gave an in-depth orientation to new members Kris Andresen, Blair Brandenburg, Charlie Follette, Alan Glick, Mijo Kim, Joey Perlmutter, Joe Pundyk, David Ross, Michele Schrader, and Oded Wolf.  Topics covered were History & Tradition, Club Organization, Membership Requirements & Procedures, Rotary International Foundation, and Personal Reflections about what Rotary means to Bill Crookston.  Despite this meeting merely ‘scratching the surface’, it was well presented and an impressive compilation that we new Rotarians very much appreciated.

•           The Santa Monica Chamber will host the Veritas Ball on October 16th.  Distinguished Rotarian Nat Trives will discuss districting and election of the Mayor of Santa Monica.  Contact Kathy Dodson for more details.

•           Hurray to Phil Tirone for submitting the winning title of the St. Monica’s chili cook off.  “It’s Fall.  It’s Chilly.  Fall For Our Chili” really struck a chord in our 90 degree heat!

•           Ever wish you could get a copy of the Santa Monica Bay coffee-table book without having to speak publicly before our Club to do so?  Now’s your chance. For the discounted price of $35, Rotarians can have their own edition. Contact Barbara Hopper. Pay her. Wait patiently. You’ll be notified when they’ve arrived.

The Welcome Mat

There were many visitors to Rotary today: James Gottfurcht, Ph.D., Craig Blenkhorn, Roger Shockley, Lucille Cayton, Jim Tierney, John M. Lehne, Evie Harb, Joe Whiteman, Russ Warner, Larry Mortorff, Patrick Bowen, Tony Christiano, Richard Clayman, Elmer Berker, Blair Green, Shania Motruk, Jason Harley, and Rev. Ronald Williams.

Fine Time

It’s unclear what he’s driving, but Marv Levin has new wheels and he’s gonna pay regardless.  $100 is the tax even if it isn’t a white Ford Aerostar.

Bill Hunt meant well.  So did Steve Alexis.  They dutifully showed up for Rotary ready to sing and pledge and participate. The only problem was it was dark that Friday before Labor Day and the meeting had been cancelled.  Verbally.  In writing.  Several Times.  $100 each for not paying attention.

They ain’t lyin’ about supporting the Lion’s Club, because one and all saw their ads in the local press.  A good many Rotarians must really go for those pancake breakfasts, which will cost $25 each in tip money: Bradmore Realty, Andresen Associates Architects, Bob Gabriel Co. Insurance, Carlthorp School, Encino State Bank, Allan Young, One Stop Print Shop, Segal Enterprises, Santa Monica Family YMCA, Robert J. Sullivan Realtor, John Lehne & Son Painting, Fisher Lumber, Quigley & Miron CPAs, First Federal Bank, and Paul Leoni.

Oops

Why, oh why, did I use an “i” to spell the name of Oyler?

And Kathleen’s name didn’t look the same.

Sorry to have annoyed her.

Please note on his roster page that Donald’s last name is correctly spelled WILKES (not Wilks.)
