Rotary District Governor’s Day
Welcome to Governor Richard “Rick” Mendoza who is from San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from Central Catholic High School, his family moved to California where he earned a BA in Microbiology from UCLA in 1957. A career with Kaiser Permanente spanned 30 years where he was Director of the Clinical and Endocrine laboratories. As a hobby, he became an LA County Certified SCUBA instructor, teaching SCUBA for 4 years. Rich completed 8 marathons, and is a member and past president of the f-Stop Photography Club. He is president of “Rick’s Travel” in Redondo Beach. Rich and his wife, Helen, met in college and have been married 45 years. Helen is a pediatric nurse practitioner, recently retired. They have 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
Rick joined the Redondo Beach Rotary Club in 1986, served on the Board of Directors since 1987 in most the avenues of service; and served as Club Treasurer, Secretary, and President in 1993-1994. In 1987, he was instrumental in development of a sister Rotary Club relationship with the Rotary Club of La Paz, Baja California, Mexico. Recognized as “Rotarian of the Year” 1989-1990 by his Rotary Club.
Traveling with the Governor is Paul A. Netzel, who is chairman/CEO of Netzel Associates, Inc., a leading management-consulting firm he founded in 1985 specializing in work with non-for-profit organizations.
A Rotarian with 34 years perfect attendance, Paul is a past-president of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles (LA5) and was 1997-98 Governor if District 5280. Paul is chair of the Host Committee for the 2008 R.I. Convention in Los Angeles and has served as a National Advisor of the Rotary Foundation Permanent Fund (2002-02) and is a recipient of The Rotary Foundation’s Citation of Meritorious Service.
Paul’s community service extends beyond Rotary having served as Mayor of Culver City, California for two terms. Previously, he served as Culver City Board of Education president, and most recently, held leadership positions on the boards of the Boys Scouts Los Angeles Area Council, the Culver-Palms YMCA, Goodwill Industries of Southern California, United Way and the Advisory Board of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Paul and Diane enjoy traveling, reading and community service – and are Paul Harris Fellows and R.I. Foundation Major Donors – and have two grown children, Chip are Shari.
Paul will discuss the International Rotary Foundation. Please join us to give our usual Santa Monica Rotary Club welcome to our District leader and receive his informative and inspirational comments.
Professor Harvey Stromberg’s Enlightment
The professor provided us with a lot to contemplate. Most of us have small singular thoughts with an occasional point of view and sometime even two (one at a time). We found the professor very unique and amazing. Plainly speaking, I have no idea how (as his Political Science student) I could have taken comprehensive notes during his lecture. “He’s too fast for me”, verbally speaking, I suppose I could have used a tape recorder.
Thank you Judy for this program, it was great.
Non-Rotarian Visitors and Guests
Three Rotaract members were guests of our club, Mitze Correa, Tari Helfinger and Ryan Hornwood. Other guests were: Juan Llauro – Dave Pissara – Rotarian, Russ Warner – Jay Smith – Rotarian, Char Lawrence – Dick Lawrence – Rotarian, Diane Berman – Robert Adams – Rotarian, Gene Kwon – Bob Klein – Rotarian.
Fines
Nat Trives - $25.00 for good work as usual. Dee Menzies – no fine. Jim Menzies – no fine. Jamie Menzies $200.00 – Jamie you have every right to protest this injustice. Spyros Dellaportas - $25.00 Cuban inflation.
The Rotary Golf Classic 2002
By popular demand this year’s golf classic was brought back to the Ojai Valley Inn and Country Club. We had 5 foursomes competing for bragging rites and prizes. The day turned out to be a great day for golf, it was a cool 60 degrees all day – wonderful conditions for a day of golf. As always, the Ojai Country Club was in great condition.
After golf, Chair Bill Aspinwall, gave out awards for the prestigious John English Award (lowest handicap golfer), The President’s Cup (lowest Callaway score), and lowest team scores. This is the second year that a trophy was given in honor of long time Rotarian and golfer, the last George Ishizuka.
This year’s winners were: Closest to the Pin #5 - Monte Herring. Closest to the Pin #12 - Paul Gaulke. Longest Drive #14 – Rotary Alumni – Denny Kelly. George Ishizuka Good Guy Award – Harmon Sieff. Low Gross with a 70 – Ron Polito – guest of Paul Gaulke (and his brother-in-law). Low Net with a 68 – Denny Kelly. Past Presidents Trophy – Low Callaway – Larry Maher. John English Trophy – Low Rotarian Net – Monte Herring.
One final note – a big thank you is in order for this year’s gold chair, Bill Aspinwall.
