Coming Our Way
Craft talks! Craft talks! Craft talks! Actually, only two of them, but, as usual, they are among the program highlights of the year. On November 15th, we will listen to :
Steve Alexis; Classification, Airline/Marketing; sponsored by Jack Siegal
John Deasy; Classification, Education/Administration; sponsored by Judy Neveau and Piedad Robertson
Also, don’t forget about our social event to be held the night of November 15th, A Lebanese Dinner, complete with belly dancing, at the Byblos Restaurant in Westwood. Please check with dinner chairman, Karim Jaude for reservations and details at 471-4185.
Veterans’ Day Recognition
The club’s members who have served our nation in the armed services were recognized, many of whom wore parts of their old uniforms. Ken Miller was singled out as being resplendent in his still-fitting complete naval uniform. But what was Our President doing in a white lab coat? Must have served in the U.S. Public Health Service.
Former secretary of the Air Force and past president and CEO of The Rand Corporation, Don Rice spoke to a full house of members and guests. Dr. Rice described the work of his current company, Agensys, located in Santa Monica, in discovering and developing new biotechnology-based treatments for cancer. This work attempts to identify molecules that are unique to the individual cancers, with the hope of disrupting the cancer’s growth pattern by attacking only that molecule via antibody therapy. Dr. Rice then described his work as a member of the 14-person presidentially appointed United States Commission on National Security in the 21st Century. This commission predicted - in September of 1999 - that our country was liable for increasing vulnerability to terrorism, and that our country’s intelligence systems were inadequate for the job. He elaborated on the commission’s other findings, which included the heightened need for a homeland security system, and that the distinction between domestic and international security no longer applies.
Heads Up
Joining President Bill and our speaker at the head table were Rosemary Regalbuto to give the invocation, Sam Muslin to introduce our visiting Rotarians and guests, George Collins to introduce our speaker, and new member Tom Larmore. With Carol Jackson at the piano, Clyde Smith led us in “God Bless America” and the flag salute.
Induction of New Members
The ever-important and always inspiring induction of new members officially added the following eleven to our membership roster: Mijo Kim, Greg Holt, Tom Larmore, Petra Haffter, Alan Glick, Mike Hyler, Bettina Duval, Joe Pundyk, Dave Ross, Michelle Schrader and Linda Tisherman. Inducting officer past president Bill Fritzsche reminded them that their individual classifications within the club have only been loaned to them and are not transferable, and urged them to maintain a high attendance record, as well as serve actively on our various committees. Bill also pointed out that this group of inductees increases by three the number of countries currently represented in our club; Korea (Mijo Kim), Germany (Petra Haffter), and Argentina (Joe Pundyk).
Attendance
Speaking of attendance, did you know that past president Frank Blenkhorn now has 57 years of perfect attendance, Phil Whiting has 43 and past president John Bohn has 37 years? There may be others unknown to your junior assistant editor with current streaks ongoing. In the past, Stan Johnson, Marv Levin, Jim Reidy, and past presidents Schiller Colberg and Nat Charnley all had perfect attendance records exceeding 30 years. What great examples for the rest of us to admire!
Please delete Edward (Ted) Chough, M.D., from your roster. Ted found that his schedule was such that it was impossible to meet the attendance requirements of Rotary.
Annual Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Dinner
Marv Levin reported that 86 of our members contributed $7,540 in support of the annual Foundation fund-raiser, a record for our club for this event. We will receive much of that back in matching funds in the next year - watch for details about what that means to you.
The Welcome Mat
Guests of Rotarians joining us last week were Cortney Murray, Juan LLauro, Gene Smith, and past Santa Monica Rotary Club member, Brad Cheves. Ya-ju Cheng, a Rotary Foundation ambassadorial scholar from Taiwan also joined us.
