Coming Our Way

Robert Tranquada, MD, Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Public Policy at USC, has an impressive array of degrees and appointments. An internist with prior faculty experience in hospital and health care administration, as well as academic medical administration, his research has been in the areas of diabetes and metabolic diseases, health care policy, and access to health care.  Dr. Tranquada will speak to us on January 17th about the state of medical care today. You’ll want to hear more about what impacts us all.

You Must Remember This….

Or, as Dr. Gary Small assures us, not remembering is commonplace too. This physician, who specializes in keeping our brains healthy, reminded us that memory is a function of all ages and can be improved upon by using techniques that benefit both mind and body. Healthy brains need a brain diet low in fat and calories and an environment that won’t imperil it (such as riding a motorcycle without a helmet).  He said that memory training uses three ‘tricks’: Look at what needs to be remembered, make a mental Snapshot of it, and Connect it by creating a link that you’ll remember.  Best yet, decide that you want to remember something, take your time, relax, and it will happen.

Heads Up

Lending their expertise to the head table were David Ross to introduce visiting Rotarians and guests; Monika White to introduce Gary Small, MD; and, Paul Gaulke to give the invocation. A moment of silence was given to the passing of George Hummer, MD. Michelle Schrader was introduced as a new member. Carol Jackson accompanied us on the piano, while John Miller led us in rousing song and pledge.

 Of Significance

bullet Rotary Club of Santa Monica is continuing its 10 years trend by participating in the Rotary District’s Group Study Exchange Program. The Program’s mission of promoting world peace and understanding employs a fully-funded, six-week trip that focuses on vocational, cultural and educational benefits. In April, four young Italian professionals will be hosted in the homes of Santa Monica Rotarians who will take them to various sites of interest and meetings with professionals and business people. Please participate by acting as a driver or travel host with other club members. Host a dinner, or a breakfast before an outing. Contact Paul Gaulke at 820-4100 or 459-9770 to become involved.  Que bella.

bullet The positive energy of Rotarians is needed by Bob Fredricks, MD, and Rev. Ronald Williams, both of whom are tackling illnesses in the hospital. We send them our best wishes for a full recovery.

bullet Another Immunization Clinic is being organized by Jim Reidy at St. John’s Hospital on February 1st at 0900.  Monika White has arranged for free parking behind the Center for Healthy Aging on 2125 Arizona.  Be there.

bullet Our Board has been active despite the holiday season. Income has improved by collections of delinquent accounts, and the budget is being maintained.  Membership is at 171, and attendance is up.

bullet The Santa Monica Rotary Boys & Girls Club structure at John Adams Middle School will be built next to the basketball court, rather than the parking lot, to give it a more visible location.  Thank Allan Young for the change.

bullet Tom Loo knows how to host a party at his home, and Karim Jaude knows how to get everyone there. They should be a powerful combination when, on April 27th, an ‘international food fest’ will feature the ethnic dishes of our Rotarians.  You can cook or bring authentic take out, but make the evening one that reminds you of home. Silent auction items are also being solicited by Oded Wolf, who has committed to something sparkly.

bullet The Salvation Army Kettle counters got a welcome surprise when an additional $700 came in the next day.  Rotary’s total of $4772 not only exceeded last year’s take, it exceeded this year’s take by Kiwanis.  Go Rotarians!

bullet Mike Hyler reminded us that blood, the gift of life, is being collected at the Riviera Country Club today.  Give generously.

The Welcome Mat

Visiting Rotarians were Jon Post from the Palisades Club and Milli Stanford Miles from Southwest LA.  Guests were Juan Llauro, Bob Kenney, Bruce Morr, Kevin Greene, and Mike Russell. Welcome to all.

The More Things Change…

Diane Margolin was granted a Leave of Absence, and Sara Frank received an extension of her current leave. It was good to see Lorraine Jossel looking so fit at lunch.  Welcome back.

Fine Time

Sam Muslin did the right thing, and what did it get him?  By catching and releasing an 80 lb. sea bass, he paid a $160 tab.  (Probably ‘cuz he got his picture taken with it first. Otherwise, it would have been the one that got away.) Robert Segal anted up $50 for having the chutzpah to advertise in the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce newsletter, and Kathy Dodson matched the $50 fine for letting him.
