WEEK 40CCRAFT TALK #7

Good morning, Americans! You know what the news is. Now you’re going to hear the REST of the story!!! And now for what it’s worth...

Head tablers for the May 19, 2000, meeting were invocateur Alonzo Hill, program chair of the day Judy Neveau, Jonathan Kemp, Tom Loo, Carol Jackson, Chris Baker, and guest introducer Con Oyler.

Our club directors distributed the District awards we received. Hugh Travis made presentations to Bill Crookston and Erik Jorgensborg for their Rotaract work. David Bohn and Marvin Levin were recognized for World Community Service. Dan Eliot was honored as a Paul Harris AFeIla,@ which is what they are called in Tennessee. Mark Olson honored Robert Segal for the new health services project this year. Dee Menzies and Frank Lavac were awarded for the Give of Yourself program. Graham Pope, our most humble APope,@ recognized John Miller for arranging our award winning program with Michael Dukakis. Ken Mirch honored Nat Trives for his hard work on the Esther Johnson Music Awards. Harmon Sieff won for our Rotary Reads to Kids program. And Ken’s work for the Public Servants Recognition Day won an award. Monte Herring presented the Golden Quill award to Rota-Monica editor Carol Jackson. Con Oyler was recognized for Membership Recruitment.

Chris Baker presented the May birthdayersCbetter late than really late!

In our own version of ATruth and/or Consequences,@ President Jack asked Michael Chesser about the DSA award that Michael received last year. That cost Mike $100. Then Jack got all previous awardees for $50: Jim Reidy, Bill Crookston, Hank Walther, Erik Brandin, and Vince Muselli. Then on his first meeting back after a leave of absence, Erik Brandin was fined an additional $50 for the Golden Quill virus that attacked a recent Rota-Monica.

Jonathan Kemp was our craft talker. He said that since he is a young guy, it would be a short speech. He played water polo at Pepperdine. He was working in Washington, DC, during the fascinating time of the impeachment. Now he is back at Pepperdine as assistant dean for advancement for the Institute for Public Policy.

Our club assembly was called to order for the purpose of approving the proposed by-law changes. They were approved.

Good day!!

When working toward the solution of a problem, it always helps if you know the answer.

WE INTERRUPT

THIS BROADCAST...

FOR A SPECIAL BULLETIN

EVENTS THAT HAVE CHANGED OUR OUTLOOK ON THE WORLD FOREVER

On July 17, 1996, many Americans were watching the Olympics from Atlanta when the broadcast was interrupted by bulletins announcing the crash of TWA Flight 800 over the Atlantic. The passengers included people of all walks of life. They were going home, starting an adventure, pursuing an opportunity, making a routine business trip. All 230 aboard perished. A massive sea and air rescue effort was mobilized. Theories flickered across the news of possible terrorism. Even the possibility of a Navy Amisguided@ missile was suggested. But eventually the FBI ruled out all theories except the possibility of mechanical failure, a spark of unknown origin ignited the vapors in the central fuel tank.

REMINDER!!

Turn in your 2000-01 pledge/committee requests by June 16th or John Lehne can fine you whatever he wants! And Norma Barnes can assign you to any number of committees!

AHONORING OUR PAST: THE WORDS AND WISDOM OF PAUL HARRIS@

Is it not a miracle that Rotary has brought together good and influential men of all civilized countries? And is it not gratifying to know that there is a platform broad enough for all men to stand on? And is it not heartwarming to know that men of diverse faiths and allegiances can find so much in each other which is wholesome and good? Rotary is an integrating force in a world where disintegrating forces are far more numerous.

OTHER NEWS FROM JUNE 1944

By June 5, 1944, the Allied army was posed to strike Nazi-held Europe. Nine thousand ships were ready. Paratroopers were the first on the ground shortly after midnight. Shortly after dawn on the 6th, the infantry landed on the 5 Normandy beaches. Ten thousand Allied planes had struck just before. The Allied casualties were over 10,000. But Hitler’s days were numbered as the Allies gained a foothold in Europe.
