Week 41—Our Northern Neighbors
Good morning, Americans! You know what the news is. Now you're going to hear the REST of the story!!! And now for what it's worth…
Head tablers for the June 2, 2000, meeting were the missing invocateur Philip Tirone, program chair of the day Piedad Robertson, Paul Leoni, Nat Trives, John Bohn, and guest introducer Graham Pope.
This was our annual day of special presentations. Nat Trives, chair of the Scholarship & Youth Awards Committee, worked hard to review applicants for these awards that we give in June of each year. The $1,000 John English Scholarship went to Jasmin Murillo from Olympic Continuation. The $1,000 Thomas Fox Scholarship went to Susannah Flood from St. Monica High School. The two $1,000 Russell Hart Scholarships went to Marta Altamirano and Ryan Malanaphy from Santa Monica High School. The Morgan Segal Scholarship went to Willa Mamet from Crossroads. The Con Oyler Scholarship went to Rayhane Sanders from New Roads High School. And the $1,000 Nick Holt Scholarship went to Carli Buchanan from Santa Monica College. The $750 Archie Morrison Scholarship went to Annie R. Bird from Santa Monica College. Good citizen plaques were awarded to Christina Bourget and Sunil Parekh from Adams Middle School. Michael Weinbraub was honored from Crossroads Middle School; Rachel McNevin, Lincoln Middle School; Chuva Featherstone, New Roads Middle School; and Calvin Chow, St. Monica Middle School. Special Achievement Awards went to Sanford Yang, Gerrardo Gondinez, and Kristal Jones. Congratulations to all of them! And thank you, Nat, for your committee's hard work!! Paul Leoni, on behalf of the Community and Youth Grants Committee, presented $2,000 to Spyros Dellaportas for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica
In our own version of "Truth and/or Consequences," President Jack fined Bill Hunt $200. Steve Lehne got off scot-free for doing very well in a golf tournament. Ed Kim didn't have to pay now that he's back from his honeymoon—that will come later!!! And Klaus Mennekes was not fined for being named Humanitarian of the Year. So Jack is now a humanitarian, too!
Piedad introduced our very special guest speaker,
The Right Honourable A. Kim Campbell, Consul General of Canada to Los Angeles.
She was most informative and insightful in her comments.
Good day!!
Factoid:
Did you know that Esther Johnson has been playing the piano for our club since 1951?
And which is the official Rotary song?
1 "Smile and the World Smiles with You"
2 "R-O-T-A-R-Y—That Spells Rotary"
3 "Home on the Range"
4 "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda"
GOTCHA! There is no official Rotary song. But you can thank Harry Ruggles, a Chicago printer, who was the fifth Rotarian and the one who introduced the practice of singing at Rotary club meetings.
Accurate Axioms, Colorful Corollaries:
Charles Dickens' Declaration:
Becoming involved in a lawsuit is like being ground to bits in
a slow mill; it's being roasted at a slow fire; it's being stung to death by a
single bee; it's being drowned by drops; it's going mad by grains.

Events that have Changed our Outlook on the World Forever
Around the world, regularly scheduled broadcasts were interrupted with news of the high speed crash in Paris of the car carrying Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Fayed. The BBC and SKYTV as well as NBC, ABC, and the 3 cable news networks carried extended coverage until 3 AM on Sunday, August 31, 1997. Diana's funeral took place the following Saturday. The coffin was taken in procession from St. James Palace to Westminster Abbey. The world watched Prince William and Prince Harry walk behind her coffin along with Prince Charles, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Earl Spencer. The funeral cortege traveled by road to Althorp where she is interred on a small island in an ornamental lake.
Reminder!!
Turn in your 2000-01 pledge/committee requests by June 16th or John Lehne can fine you whatever he wants! And Norma Barnes can assign you to any number of committees!
